The TEJAS project is a joint
initiative delivered through a partnership between the Government of
Maharashtra, Tata Trusts and the British Council. It aims to improve the
quality of English language learning in primary schools. Under this initiative,
teachers form face-to-face and digital communities of practice in their local
areas through Teacher Activity Groups (TAGs). This enables them to develop
their language ability, teaching skills, knowledge and experience. TEJAS also
aims to revitalise the State Institute of English, Aurangabad, so that is it
equipped to independently plan, manage and support English training initiatives
across the state. Under the current programme, Teacher Activity Groups taken
place across nine districts in Maharashtra (Aurangabad, Beed, Hingoli,
Nashik, Nandurbar, Nagpur, Gadchiroli, Amravati and Yavatmal).
As am working with British Council as a Tejas Tag Co coordinator. I
conduct Tag meeting once a month for
each cluster. I have three tags. Each tag has 25 teachers from z.p.priamry
schools. By attending these meetings teachers gain more confidence in their
ability to communicate effectively in English, especially in the classroom. They
learn new ideas and teaching techniques to use in their teaching. Share their
own experiences of teaching and learning English with other teachers. They find
classroom resources, to create positive environment in classroom. How to
motivate students to speak English with teacher and friends. Teachers learn how
to create profile of their learners, to know strengths, skills and interests of
learners.
Teachers
learn about their professional development. In four sections tag meeting is
held.1) Language development – They focus on basic vocabulary and
grammar, followed by activities to improve their speaking fluency. 2)
Learning by watching – Tag co coordinator shows them some short classroom
films. In these films teachers from Maharashtra trying learner centered
activities in their lessons. How to use different language games in teaching.3)
Learning by reading – In this section articles on topics related to English
language teaching methods for primary classrooms. They include topics such as
lesson planning, teaching large classes and motivating students. After reading
group discussion and reflection tasks are taken.4) Reflection and action
planning – This section is for reflect on the ideas of teachers which used
in conducting activities. Teachers do the action planning for next month’s
classroom teaching.
In
this way now tremendous changes are taking place in primary students. Students
from z.p.primary schools speaking fluently English. They are playing different
language games and activities in classroom as well playground. Teachers are
making videos of their students and sharing social media, uploading on YouTube.
Which helps to increase confidence of other teachers also. Others are trying
these activities in their classroom. One strong media is our ATM groups which
helps teachers to learn different English Language games and other things from
each other.
LIVE ENGLISH, LOVE ENGLISH.
Thanks.
