Translanguaging in English language classrooms in India: Why, when ...

Jason Anderson gave the plenary at the 12 International and 48 Annual
ELTAI Conference at Ernakulam, from 29 June to 1 July 2017.
Translanguaging, the integrated use of different ‘languages’ in communicative acts, is a natural and ancient phenomenon in India. While there is evidence that it is both widespread and beneficial in classrooms of other subjects, its inclusion in English language classrooms is hampered by the dominance of ‘English-only’, or ‘English-mainly’ approaches to language teaching that disseminate from a more monolingual West. But can multilingual countries like India take a different path to effective competence in the use of English? In this talk I will invite you to consider the future translingual needs of Indian learners of English and compare these to both current and potential practices in English classrooms. We will consider why both monolanguaging and translanguaging are likely to be useful to learners in the future and look at practical activities and |

of school in class V due to the poor economic
condition of her family. However, thanks to the KGBV

www.ssashagun.nic.in
The online monitoring module of
Shagun measures state-level performance
and progress
against key educational indicators
which enables the Government of India and the State and
UT Departments of Education to conduct
real-time assessments
which normal paper-based
monitoring mechanisms did not allow.
The SSA scheme covers around
110 million children in Classes
I-VIII in around 1 million schools
across the country with one of the
highest annual budgets.
Monitoring the implementation of
a scheme of such a magnitude
was a huge challenge. The online
monitoring module was designed
to fill this gap by streamlining the
data collection processes in order
to track the efficiency with which
SSA funds are being utilized and
the results that this is delivering.
There are currently 122 Reports,
which are automatically
generated from the data filled in.
Additionally, all the guidelines,
instructions, the framework of
implementation, letters and
communications to States and all
possible related information has
been uploaded on the portal for
ready reference of the
Department and all States and
UTs.
Online Monitoring
The main functions are:
Fund utilisation tracking
Performance measurement on key educational indicators
Online planning & goal setting
Physical targets and outcomes monitoring
The portal offers
Data analytics and generates graphics
which represent the progress of States and UTs against
key identified parameters such as exact number of out of school children mainstreamed, the increase or decrease
in enrolment in government schools vis-à-vis private schools and the expenditure on teachers’ salaries compared
to expenditure on increasing the learning outcomes, and more.
This will enable the tracking of every single
rupee being spent by States and UTs, as well as the impact of this expenditure.

GUIDE LETTER FROM RUSSIA.
On 20-Jul-2017 1:31 AM, "Анастасия Смирнова" <stasysmi@gmail.com> wrote:
Hello Bhagwan abd Sameer,How did the new school year start? Are you and your students anticipating changes in your curriculum or extracurricular activities?I think I've already made myself clear, but I want to stress again saying that you as mentors and teachers have done an amazing job of transforming your teaching style into a modern and up to date one. And since the BC program has come to an end, you might be thinking about what to do next: go on meeting with peer colleagues and supporting each other in further attempts to make classes more learner centred.Since you are quite active in social media, I'd assume you tend to spend a lot of time in social media to keep in touch and follow teaching trends. What I encourage you all to do is to initiate a one year project aiming at fluency among English teachers. As you know the best way to achieve fluency is by reading books and watching movies. So my idea is to cut teacher trainer sessions to monthly ones and run a reading club instead. Teachers would read books they like and discuss those when they meet. You can also run a book-crossing campain, e.g. each teacher buys a book he/she wants to read, then swaps books with another colleague. You can also set up an online page with book reviews you all write, so that other colleagues know what you've read and read a book you've recommended. Writing a review will also stimulate your writing skills and will be a sort of revision of the new vocab. You can also make a competition among maharastra cities/towns for the largest number of books read in English and reviewed.A reading club or a movie club will bring all of you closer and foster collaboration.Ideally I would initiate a reading club in your local schools too, so that schoolchildren could borrow graded readers from the school library to read one book per month or listen to it.It's the only way to polish your English skills if you don't have access to native speakers on a regular basis. Whereas social media is eating your time, a reading club will help you form a habit of reading books and watching movies on a regular basis . And once you've made this step, your English level will rise and you become a better teacher.Sorry guys for not posting much recently in the whatsapp forum. I'm kinda stuck, because I don't believe any more in coaching miles away. Will do my best and be in touch when I've got something worthwhile to share.Kisses to your kids and wives.Best,Nastya

Tip

something, the more anxiety and tension you generate. Write short weekly
lists of tasks and complete them.
Tip
7. * Put everywhere nice memories, phrases and photos of your loved
ones *: Fill your fridge, your computer, your desk, your room, YOUR LIFE
of beautiful memories.
Tip 8. * Always greet and be nice to other people *: More than 100 inquiries state that just smiling changes the mood.

slightly backwards and the front view helps to maintain a good mood.Tip
11. * Listen to music * (Praise God): It is proven that listening to
music awakens you to sing, this will make your life happy.
Tip
12. * What you eat has an impact on your mood *:- Do not skip meals,
